International Surface Miners Pty Ltd was created to serve the needs of the Australian coal industry by providing solutions to problems which could be solved by the introduction of surface miners. ISM's main objective is to provide a complete solution for new coal projects including Government approvals, consulting, project management services, equipment supply, approvals for equipment to operate in Australian coal mines and operating equipment under contract. ISM plans to use surface miners to provide selective mining of the individual plies of coal and non-coal splits and interburdens which may remove the need for washing. They will be used to remove the overburden where traditional drill and blast methods cannot be used due to sensitive environmental restrictions.

There are many factors which will ensure the success of the company, some of these being the necessity in the coal industry to increase coal recovery by extracting thinner coal seams, the need to reduce or eliminate blasting, the need to reduce or avoid coal washing, the possibility to make pit floor more trafficable thus leading to savings on tyres and maintenance of trucks and loaders, as well as the opportunities for use of the surface miner machines in other commodity markets.
